BHOPAL: About 5000 bicycles to be distributed to the school girls of class 6th to9th have been rusting in Sagar district. These bicycles were to be distributed from 2017-8 to 2019-20.
Under the free bicycle distribution scheme , the bicycle is given by the state government to a rural girl, who takes admission in class IX in another village. Since 2009, the benefit of this scheme was extended to girls belonging to all sections of society.
The scheme was later expanded further and now free bicycles are also being given to the girls who live in a village without a middle school.
In Deori and Kesli blocks of Sagar district, a large number of such bicycles are stored in a government school in Kesli. The school principal said that the cycle RK Sondhiya told the local media that the cycles were stored for long.
Congress MLA from Sagar Harsh Yadav said that this was a very sensitive issue. He said that the district administration had informed him that the bicycles were not distributed since 2017-18.
The MLA quoting the district administration said that 1709 bicycles to be distributed in 2017-18 ,744 for the year 2018-19 and 3273 bicycles for the year 2019-20 have been" rusting". He said that this needs to be probed why the cycles were not given to the needy students. Last month, there were reports of such bicycles being sold in open market in Chattarpur district
